Lagging

January 23, 2008

Another early morning for me. I woke up at 4am today. Which is marginally better than the 2am wakeup yesterday. I’m wide awake now. But by 11am my face will be in a bowl of cereal. Because I will have fallen asleep while eating cereal. Try teaching the future [...]

Detroit: Part II

January 20, 2008

Cheesestrings notwithstanding, it’s maddening being so close to home but not… being home.  Our connecting flight to Toronto isn’t for another five hours.  I could take a bus and get there faster.
I can’t wait to wake up in my own bed.  I’m just tired and grumpy.

Just When I Thought I Was Out

January 19, 2008

They pull me back in.
I’ve finished all my meetings and even handed in my preliminary report on the church plant yesterday (the reason I’m here). I was in a relaxed mindset, ready to enjoy one more day of summer in January. And then, I was woken by my father-in-law at five in the [...]

Cockadoodle

January 18, 2008

I was excited to spend the night in Lagaspi, away from my friend, the Infernal Rooster. Imagine my delight waking up to a chorus of roosters. We were next door to some sort of rooster/cockfighting farm. The Philippines national past-time.
Staying with us in the guest house here in Manila is a Mennonite [...]

Corregidor Pics

January 16, 2008

Here are some pictures I took of the island I visited on Tuesday.
This isn’t the boat I took, but it had a pretty rainbow beside it.
The northern harbour of Corregidor. Scared away by the Japanese, Gen. MacArthur said, “I shall return.” And he did.
A series of tunnels under the mountain [...]

Stayin’ Alive

January 15, 2008

While at dinner with my father-in-law and his colleagues last night, I inadvertently started singing. I get pretty tired after 7:30, and I guess I was kinda in my own head space. The Bee Gees were on the radio when we pulled into the restaurant, and near the end of the meal I [...]

Pictures and Post-Apocalypse

January 13, 2008

With the humidity and heat and ceiling fan on full blast, the air reminds me of summers a long time ago. The house I lived in as a teenager didn’t have air-conditioning, so if I close my eyes I could be fifteen again, lying on me bed, back propped against pillows, reading a book.
Each [...]

Rats With Wings

January 11, 2008

I think this is going to be a short post since I get so tired around this time of the day. Yesterday I forced myself to stay awake until 9:30 but I blacked out around 9. And the hour before that was not productive. It consisted of using all my faculties to [...]

Manila

January 9, 2008

I’m here. I’ve been awake for 1,203 hours.
After a long shower and a longer poop (about 127 inches), I’m feeling OK. We’re at the World Team guest house in Quezon City. Sounds futuristic. Isn’t.
I had terrible gas on the 13 hour flight to Japan. But since five other people were [...]

Detroit

January 8, 2008

We’re currently in some fancy elite flyers’ club lounge eating cheese strings and enjoying free wireless!  Exclamation point.
After four hours we’ve successfully completed 1/6 of our journey.  I’m exhausted.  From Pippin wailing through the night and then Lola yelling at him, I had a fantastic sleep.
But it’s nice to have a place to relax while [...]
